Hi, I’m John Thompson and I’ll be your instructor. 

I've been providing course design and application training to groups and individuals for over a decade, and my own computer training and experience extends back to when I packed around my operating system on a floppy disk. If you don't know what that means then you're at the right site! 
 

In 1993 after being immersed in the computer industry for 10 years, I tried to explain the wonders of the desktop computer to my unknowing parents (no…they knew they were my parents!).  Their response was that they were quite comfortable writing letters by hand and they had a book that they wrote everyone’s address in, IN PENCIL so that it could be changed if the person moved.  And comfortable they were…for about the next ten years. 

Then about five years ago my parents started approaching me and asking questions that maybe I could find answers for on the Internet for them, “oh, and maybe you could email your Aunt to send some pictures from her last trip out here…please?”

Over the subsequent years I wondered how many other families are going through similar situations.  With so much of our communication and recreation relying on computers and the Internet…probably lots.  But here’s a thought, how many elderly people are out there without somebody acting as their Internet interpreter?  How many working people have the time, proximity and most of all, the patience to teach their parents, relatives and neighbours how to communicate online for themselves?
